Coffee & Breakfast
woods, rivers, and fall
Strange isn’t it? We’ve been through a rollercoaster of a summer in the upper Midwest. It’s been either 95 degrees with 100% humidity, or pouring rain for days on end.
I was for sure there wouldn’t be a pheasant left running around in the grass after all that rain, but according to the experts, we can expect a bumper year. Time to get out the shotgun and oil it up.
In the time and place where I grew up, at least 25% of the trucks had a sticker of some sort that said … “If it flies, it dies.”
That pretty much means one thing. Fall is knocking on the door. It’s arrived and it wants in. The trees seem to be fighting back, the weak leaves turning yellow with a few early ones going red already. I can relate to them, sometimes you get tired after a long summer and you just want to lay down.
In the Woods.
That’s my sign, when the cool air starts to arrive in the morning, it’s harbinger of good times to come. Soon enough I will be shoveling pieces of wood into a stove in my hot tent while the snow falls outside.
When I sit in the uncommon space found underneath a grove of oaks, the river still a little high and pushing south quickly, I wonder if God looks down from on high on the sons of men and sees us like I see the leaves.
Some in the green of full life, some starting to yellow and show age, others giving up the ghost and heading to the ground. That’s the human existence, one generation comes forth to fight the storms, others are wrapping things up.
Best to just find peace and happiness in whatever state you find yourself in.
Simple Things.
A cup of hot freshly ground coffee sliding down the old gullet. Freshly scrambled eggs and veggies sizzling in a pan, with good company only a few steps away. The simple things in life is the cure for all sorts of ills in life.
Unlike our unfortunate and awkward Canadian cousins to the north, who are not allowed to go in the woods, we freedom loving Americans, can roam and do as we please. Gotta love those founding fathers.
Long week at work? Troubles in the family? The world got you down? Got for a sit in the woods, or a walk. Find the nearest river with an oak tree bending and doing its eternal bow of respect over the bank. Heck, if you’re feeling spicy, take a friend with you.
